Environmental Responsibility

A responsible future requires action. We have calculated our carbon footprint and set science-based emission reduction targets in line with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

Voimatel’s emissions calculation

Voimatel’s emissions calculation includes:
– Scope 1, meaning direct greenhouse gas emissions resulting from Voimatel’s own operations

– Scope 2, meaning greenhouse gas emissions from the production of energy purchased and consumed by Voimatel

– Scope 3, meaning other relevant indirect greenhouse gas emissions generated in the value chain, where the emission sources are not under Voimatel’s control

According to the calculation, Voimatel’s total emissions in 2025 were 13,029 t CO2e. Emissions from our own operations (Scope 1) and energy consumption (Scope 2) accounted for 14 percent of the total.

Clearly the largest share of emissions, 86 percent, came from indirect (Scope 3) emission sources. In this category, the most significant emission source was purchased goods and services, accounting for 86 percent of Scope 3 emissions.

The largest emission sources are linked to the nature of the industry: the use of the vehicle fleet, purchased services and materials, and value chain operations.

Voimatel’s carbon footprint calculation includes the figures for Voimatel and its Estonian subsidiary Boftel.

Fossil-free energy and waste management cooperation reduced the carbon footprint

The measures taken are most visible in the Scope 2 figures, which describe greenhouse gas emissions from the production of energy purchased and consumed by Voimatel. We have transitioned to fossil-free electricity and heat in our premises wherever possible.

The waste management cooperation started with Stena Recycling is also reflected in the 2024 and 2025 figures. The carbon footprint caused by waste decreased by one third, amounting to approximately 140 tCO2e in 2025.

Science Based Targets initiative

We are committed to SBTi targets

Voimatel Oy’s emission reduction targets were approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) on 13 May 2026. The approval confirms that the company’s emission reduction targets are aligned with the latest climate science and the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C target.

Voimatel commits to reaching net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2050. As an interim target, Voimatel aims to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its own operations by 42 percent by 2030 from the 2023 base year.

In addition, Scope 3 emissions will be reduced by 51.6 percent in relation to the value generated by the business over the same period. This means that emissions are assessed in relation to the economic value generated by Voimatel, meaning revenue less purchases.

The long-term target is to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90 percent and Scope 3 emissions by 97 percent by 2050.

Voimatel continues to actively reduce emissions in its own operations and in cooperation with customers, subcontractors and material suppliers.

Our measures to reduce the carbon footprint

In the double materiality assessment we carried out in 2024, climate change emerged as the most important sustainability matter for our operations. This is why our primary focus is on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, committing to SBTi targets and finding ways to adapt to climate change.

Reducing the carbon footprint can only be achieved through concrete measures. In our transition plan, we are first addressing, among other things, Scope 3 categories that were identified in the carbon footprint measurement as the most significant sources of emissions. At the same time, we recognised that we need more data on the matter in order to report in accordance with legislative requirements and define the measures required to achieve emission reductions.

The first measures we are taking to reduce emissions:

  • We will gradually transition to electric vehicles where local conditions allow. In this change, it must be recognised that Voimatel is a critical security of supply operator, and we must have vehicles using all power sources so that we can secure network operations in all situations.
  • We will gradually increase the use of biofuels in our own production vehicles and in subcontracting.
  • We will transition to fossil-free electricity and heat at all sites where this is possible.
  • We will cooperate with material suppliers and service providers to reduce emissions.
  • We will increase climate awareness among our personnel and promote sustainable choices, including in work-related travel.
