Responsible networks for a safer future

At Voimatel, sustainability is an integral part of our strategy and a theme that increasingly guides everything we do.

Together with our parent company KPY, we report on our sustainability work in KPY’s 2025 Sustainability Report. The voluntary report brings together the key sustainability targets, priorities and metrics of both the Group and Voimatel, and describes the concrete actions we are taking across our operations. The report is prepared with reference to the principles of the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

We are making steady progress towards a more sustainable future, supported by a clear roadmap, defined targets and continuous development of our operations. Sustainability is embedded throughout our organisation, with active participation from our employees, management and partners.

Key highlights from our sustainability work include:

Materiality assessment

Voimatel’s 2024 materiality assessment

In spring 2024, we conducted a double materiality assessment. The assessment provides us with important insight into the material impacts, dependencies, risks and opportunities related to our operations — the matters we need to focus on as we continue our sustainability journey.

In the double materiality assessment, we examined impact materiality: the effects our operations have on the environment, people and society. At the same time, we assessed financial materiality: how anticipated risks and opportunities in our operating environment may affect Voimatel’s business financially.

We defined the material topics in cooperation with an external expert partner. To identify the material topics, we engaged representatives from different stakeholder groups and analysed the findings in internal workshops.

Climate change and own workforce identified as the most material factors

In Voimatel’s materiality assessment, the most significant topics were those related to climate change and our own workforce. Pollution, biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as resource use and the circular economy, were identified as material environmental impacts, but their financial impact was not considered to be as significant.

In terms of climate change impacts, the most significant factor in our operations is that building and maintaining data networks across Finland’s extensive geography requires travel by both our own personnel and subcontractors. In addition, the manufacturing and transportation of the materials used by Voimatel generate greenhouse gas emissions.

For a large part of Voimatel’s personnel, the work involves exposure to accidents and risks. This makes occupational health and safety practices particularly important. In addition, we need to pay attention to gender pay equality and use training to ensure that employees’ competence keeps pace with the rapid development of the industry.

Based on this double materiality assessment, Voimatel set a primary objective to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, commit to SBTi targets and identify ways to adapt to climate change. At the same time, greater attention was directed towards occupational health and safety practices, through which we aim to strengthen employee engagement and improve wellbeing.

Operating principles

Voimatel’s management system is certified and complies with the requirements of the international occupational health and safety management system standard ISO 45001, quality management system standard ISO 9001 and environmental management system standard ISO 14001.

The management system is applied across all areas of the organisation’s business operations.

Code of Conduct and whistleblowing channel

The Code of Conduct provides common guidelines for operations at all levels of the company. It covers the basic principles that help Voimatel employees choose the right course of action in working life situations that require personal judgement.

Through Voimatel’s whistleblowing channel, our own personnel and other stakeholders, such as our customers, suppliers and partners, can report possible deviations or violations.
